The fund was set up in memory of Teixeira's childhood friend, Nick Liberatore who died in a 1997 car accident at age 16.
Teixeira and his wife Leigh decided to set up the fund in North Texas.

Being of Portuguese ancestry, I've been following Mark since his days at Georgia Tech. We both Idolize Don Mattingly, and Mark wears the number 23, which is the same number Don Mattingly wears.
I'm hoping to meet him one day, and get an in-person autograph with our son Alex.

Chuck James did a good impression of Tom Glavine. Just hours after coming back from the minors, James allowed one run in five innings and the Atlanta bullpen shut down the Dodgers the rest of the way, leading the Braves past Los Angeles 4-1 Saturday for their third straight victory. Mark Teixeira's two-run single highlighted a four-run fifth that accounted for all the Atlanta scoring and handed...

Source: Fox Sports [03/26/2008]
Gerald Laird won his duel with Jarrod Saltalamacchia for the job as the Texas Rangers' starting catcher. Saltalamacchia was optioned to the Rangers' minor league camp Wednesday. The 22-year-old switch-hitter, acquired in the July trade that sent Mark Teixeira to Atlanta, will catch every day at Triple-A Oklahoma. The Rangers spent spring training allowing Laird, the opening day starter last season, and Saltalamacchia to compete for the starting job.

Source: Fox Sports [01/18/2008]
Mark Teixeira, Huston Street and Brad Lidge were among 22 players who avoided arbitration by agreeing to contracts Thursday, one day before teams and players exchange figures. Toronto reliever Scott Downs cashed in on a breakout season, getting a $10 million, three-year deal. The only other player to get a multiyear contract was Blue Jays infielder Marco Scutaro ($2.65 million for two years).

ATLANTA PARTS WITH ANDRUW JONES
Source: Sportsline [10/02/2007]
Center fielder Andruw Jones is done with the Braves, general manager John Schuerholz said Tuesday, because the team can't afford to keep the perennial Gold Glove center fielder who has spent his entire career in Atlanta. The move was not unexpected as the 30-year-old Jones slumped in the final season of his $75 million contract. He's eligible to file for free agency after the World Series. Jones made $13.5 million this year, and the Braves plan to use that on bolstering their pitching and signing first baseman Mark Teixeira, who made $9 million this year and is eligible for arbitration. Still, it was the end of an era in Atlanta. Jones first joined the Braves as a 19-year-old, hitting two homers in his first World Series game at Yankee Stadium in 1996.
