Manny Ramirez's pursuit of his 500th home run will have to wait for at least another day. Ramirez, who has 497 career homers, was given Sunday night off against the Minnesota Twins because of a sore right hamstring. Manager Terry Francona said he saw Ramirez come up a little gimpy while running out a grounder in Saturday night's 5-2 victory over the Twins.

Boston Red Sox starter Curt Schilling played long toss before Thursday's game against the Detroit Tigers, continuing his rehabilitation from a shoulder injury. Red Sox manager Terry Francona said that the session went well, although progress hasn't been as quick as the 41-year-old pitcher would like. "He wants to feel like he's 24 again, and I don't know how likely that's ever going to be," Francona said.

Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling testing his ailing shoulder by playing catch on flat ground Tuesday but isn't ready to begin throwing off a mound. "He did good. He looked good," manager Terry Francona said. "It's a good step for him. But he's not ready yet." The 41-year-old right-hander threw 25 balls from 60 feet away. He'll repeat the exercise Thursday before the Red Sox complete a four-game series against the Tigers. "Well that day is here, finally.

Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz was out of the starting lineup for the second consecutive game Sunday with a bruised right knee. Ortiz was hurt while diving into first base attempting to beat out a double-play grounder in the final inning of Friday's 5-4, 11-inning loss to Tampa Bay. "He's sore," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. Ortiz is undergoing treatment for the injury, which is not considered serious.
