The outfield flags whipped in the wind and it sure looked like a night when the ball might carry. Sure enough, seven home runs sailed over the fences. Erick Aybar and Bobby Abreu hit back-to-back homers, John Lackey ended a four-start winless stretch and the Los Angeles Angels beat the San Francisco Giants 9-7 on Monday night for their fourth straight victory.
An inside look at Saturday's best and worst performances: 3 Up
1. Torii Hunter, OF, Angels. Hunter went back-to-back-to-back with three home runs in the Angels' rout of the Padres. Too bad all of those were solo shots, but fantasy owners still can't complain with Hunter, who is off to a fantastic start this season with a .321 batting average and .627 slugging percentage, which are both well ahead of his career norms.
2. Alex Rios, OF, Blue Jays. Rios hasn't been the fantasy force most owners expected, but he's starting to come alive. He went 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and a stolen base. Perhaps Rios was responding from being dropped from No. 3 to No. 6 in the Blue Jays' order. His average is up to .276, but he'll still need to do more to overcome a slow start by his standards.
3. Julio Lugo, SS, Red Sox. Like Rios, Lugo had four hits on Saturday. Unlike Rios, Lugo's spot in the Boston lineup is anything but a sure thing. And with Jed Lowrie set to come back soon, things could get even dicier for Lugo, who has been sharing time with Nick Green. So Lugo needs more performances like these to become a fantasy factor again.
3 Down
1. Daisuke Matsuzaka, SP, Red Sox. We go to the bad side of Beantown to find Dice-K, who continues to struggle to find his rhythm this season. Matsuzaka again failed to pitch deep into the game, lasting just four innings against the Phillies and giving up seven hits and four runs. His ERA is up to 7.55 and his WHIP is 2.10. Bench him until further notice.
2. Bronson Arroyo, SP, Reds. After back-to-back good starts on May 22 and 27, Arroyo has returned to being unreliable. The Royals blasted him for six runs and 11 hits in five innings, and he is 0-2 in his past three outings. Be very careful when you use Arroyo, because you never know what you are going to get.
3. Manny Parra, SP, Brewers. Parra allowed six runs, six hits and three walks in 1.2 innings against the White Sox, and for the Brewers that was enough. Milwaukee sent Parra to Triple-A and called up Chris Narveson. Parra was 0-4 in his five starts prior to being sent down.
